A Fair Price to Pay: Exploiting Causal Graphs for Fairness in Insurance

A causal graph tailored for insurance gives formal definitions of direct and indirect discrimination, and sorts fair pricing methodologies into five families by the fairness properties they can deliver.

Every premium is a normative choice: price fairness is governed by a trilemma between actuarial adequacy, solidarity, and causal legitimacy, and we build the governance architecture (scorecard, causal due diligence, comply-or-explain oversight) to manage it as such.

Course lecturer (with Justine Power) for this mandatory undergraduate course (3 credits, 54 students enrolled, Winter 2023). I led a two-hour workshop every week and was responsible for the oral presentations and the class project. We were awarded the Teaching Star Award for this class.
